Note: A BMI Prime of 1.0 corresponds to a BMI of 25 (the upper limit of "Normal/Healthy" weight).
What is BMI Prime?
BMI Prime is a simple way of interpreting a standard BMI score. It is calculated by dividing your actual BMI by the upper limit of "Healthy" BMI (which is 25).
The Formula:
BMI Prime = BMI / 25
BMI Prime = BMI / 25
Why is it useful?
BMI Prime is particularly useful for comparing body weight across different populations because it normalizes the data.
- 1.0: A BMI Prime of 1.0 is the cutoff for "Overweight" (BMI 25). Anything below 1.0 is generally considered healthy.
- 1.2: A BMI Prime of 1.2 is the cutoff for "Obese" (BMI 30).
- Populations: It allows researchers to compare risk groups without worrying about whether a country defines obesity as BMI 25, 28, or 30.
Categories (Based on BMI Prime)
- Underweight: Less than 0.74
- Healthy / Normal: 0.74 to 0.99
- Overweight: 1.0 or greater
- Obese: 1.2 or greater
